Getting the Word Out: The Role of Nature-Based, Environmentally Moral Education in Climate Change

Headwaters education booth at climate change symposium

On January 20, 2025, Headwaters presented a booth at the Kingston Climate Change Symposium. An annual event hosted by the non-profit organization Sustainable Kingston, the theme of this year's Symposium was "Rooted in Action: Empowering Youth to Grow a Sustainable Future." Given this focus, the event attracted school group, teachers, and educators from the Kingston area and beyond.

We at Headwaters are always looking for opportunities to engage in important discussions regarding the need for developing communities of care among and between humans and nonhumans like, and the significant role of an environmentally moral education (attendant to the values of wild nature) in creating this future. The Kingston Climate Change Symposium provided a wonderful opportunity to do just that. With Devin, Keilan, and Maya in attendance from Headwaters, they spoke throughout the day with students and educators of all types: classroom teachers, retired teachers, administrators, and outdoor educators. Many amazing and thought-provoking conversations were had, and the Headwaters crew was thrilled with the level of interest and commitment that other educators have for addressing the gaping, natural-world-sized hole in our educational system.

Core to Headwaters' mission is disseminating our research findings and sharing our ideas and practices. If you know of any events, groups, committees, or symposiums which align with, or could benefit from, the mission and expertise of Headwaters, please feel welcome to get in touch and let us know. We'd love to hear from you!

We thank Sustainable Kingston for putting on this great event, and we look forward to attending again next year.
